After the death of his father Hekatomnos in 377/376 BC, Maussollos' decision to leave his homeland Mylasa and move the capital to Halicarnassus is the most important project known in the history of Caria culture.
With this project, Maussollos aimed to build a metropolis that rivaled the most famous architects, planners and artists of his time and west's most important cultural center, Athens, on the opposite side of the Aegean, not only in terms of urbanization and architecture, but also in terms of culture.
Maussollos, who completely renovated the old Carian city of Alukarnassa, which was established in small settlements on the hills, with reconstruction and construction activities and equipped it with monumental structures, established Halikarnassos as a political and military naval base.
At the same time, he ruled Karia from here for the 24 years in power.
The walls, which are the most important remnants of the city of Halicarnassus from the past to the present, are the most important part of the new construction project implemented by Maussollos.
It is the known pioneering masterpiece of superior polyorcetic military engineering in Anatolia.
The etudes carried out have an essential worth and value, not only in understanding the ancient defense systems, but also in illuminating the archaeological past of Halicarnassus, which could not be explored by excavation due to intense construction and therefore remained in the dark.
